› › HOW TO
Step 14: Here’s the fun part! Click the Play
Animation icon () at the bottom of your Time-
line panel, and your animation will play in a
loop. You could go back and add more sketch
layers to give it a little extra fun, but you can
save that for your playtime after you’ve learned
this technique.
Step 15: You’ll need to export this to use on
social media or your website. Remember, you
may want to change the document dimensions
to best suit where you’ll be sharing it.
Exporting it is pretty simple. Just go up to
File>Export>Save for Web (Legacy)—this is still
the simplest way—to bring up the Save for Web
dialog. On the right, you’ll want to save the file
as a GIF. Keep the Colors at the maximum 256,
and Dither at 100%. Leave the default settings
for everything else, as well.
We need to decide how the animation will
play when exported, so go to the bottom of the
dialog and click on the Looping Options. You
have three choices: Once, Forever, or Other,
where you can manually set the loop count.
Let’s go with Forever, which is a mighty long
time—let’s go crazy!
Step 16: Once you’ve made all those settings,
c lick Save and save the file to wherever you
want. Then, go to where you saved it, click on
it, and either hit the Spacebar or drag it onto
your web browser to watch it play. Now it’s up
to you where you share it.
Now that you know how to create a simple ani-
mation, you can experiment with more layers,
more effects, and more colors to create some
fantastic GIFs. (We all agree it’s not pronounced
JIF, right? ) Have fun and I’ll see you next
issue with another design tutorial! n
