2 DIRECT TONAL SKETCHES

A direct tonal pen sketch is followed by a light

wash of colour.

1 Here I worked directly onto the paper,

building up tone by making textural marks.

I held a 0.5 pen slightly on the side rather

than upright to give a varied line in places.

When working in this way, try to keep the

pen moving on the paper. Hold it loosely so

it is flexible, giving continuous movement,

interpreting foliage as little squiggles or

S-shapes, stippled dot effects or diagonal

t shading. Rather than working to the edge

of the paper I created a vignette effect,

suggesting a glimpse of the house that

forms the focal point of interest, fading

off at the edge.

2 To complete this I applied a loose

wash of diluted colour wet on dry, again

leaving a loosely painted edge.
