Watercolour

Step 2 First washes
1 Mix a large pool of yellow ochre and a pool of ultramarine
blue and burnt sienna in your palette. Wet the area above
the horizon line with clean water and add the pools of
colour using the two wash brushes.
3 While this is still wet add more colour to give variation.
Allow this to dry.
4 Use the smaller wash brush to apply cobalt blue
to the loch.

t

Step 4 Foreground
1 Dilute some of the grey in the palette to paint
the grey shingle beach between the foreground
and the headland with the large Round brush.
2 Cover the foreground mainly in burnt sienna
with a touch of yellow ochre, occasionally using
the smaller wash brush.
3 Before this is dry use the large Round brush
to add less diluted colours and let them mix.
Colours to add are alizarin crimson, French
ultramarine and yellow ochre. The more
haphazard you apply the colours, the better
the result. Don’t be tempted to fiddle and don’t
add too much water to avoid back runs. Use the
point of the brush to flick upwards now and
then to create the impression of tufts of grass.
4 The headland is a mix of ultramarine blue
and burnt sienna with a little water added;
think of the texture of single cream. This
keeps your colours from drying too light.
5 I reapplied the mix here and there to imply
form and added a touch of yellow ochre near
the shingle beach. This was all done with
the large Round brush.

t

Step 3 Hill definition
1 Revive the pools of colour in the palette. Using a hit-and-miss
approach and a large wash brush, allow some of the initial washes
to show through, creating texture and form in the hillside.
2 Dab the grey mix in the yellow areas to suggest trees. I wanted
to retain the tone of evening sunlight on the hills so was careful
about how much grey I added.
3 Just before this dries use a Round brush to suggest rock
crevasses here and there.

t

Step 1 Drawing
Using a straight edge lightly draw the horizon line where the loch meets
the hills then suggest the headland and foreground. No further drawing
is needed, as the trees and other details will be painted over a lighter
background. If you prefer, however, add these in pencil now.
