TRANEXAMIC ACID, an ingredient to look out
for in 2020, particularly if you have issues
with irregular pigmentation or melasma.
‘Ea rly ev idence t hat tra nexa mic acid ca n
manage these conditions is promising,’
says the dermatologist Dr Justine Kluk. It
is a key ingredient in SkinCeuticals’ new
Discoloration Defense serum, which was
shown to improve discolouration by 46
per cent in a 12-week clinical study.
BAZAAR RECOMMENDS: SkinCeuticals
Discoloration Defense Serum, £85

USE-BY DATES, represented on beauty products by a symbol of a cylindrical pot with
an open lid. Inside the symbol will be a number followed by the letter ‘M’, which
stands for ‘months’. For example, 12M means that, once opened, the product
can be safely used for one year.

WATER, also referred to as ‘aqua’, and often the first ingredient listed on a product. It is used as a solvent in which
skin-benefiting components can be dissolved, and in emulsions for creams and lotions. Some brands, such as Chantecaille
and Caudalie, offer ‘beauty waters’ enriched with rose or grape, which employ the qualities of these botanicals.
BAZAAR RECOMMENDS: Chantecaille Pure Rosewater, £65

VITAMINS, which have a crucial role in skincare. As
with vitamin A (retinoids), vitamin C is essential
for maintaining good skin health. ‘It helps to
improve tone, protecting against free radicals and
boosting radiance,’ says Dr Sturnham, who advises
using a serum containing at least 10 per cent vitamin
C. Use it in capsu le for m or store it in a n opaque
bottle, as it degrades when exposed to light and air.
Alongside its antioxidant powers, vitamin E is
known for its repairing and soothing properties.
BAZAAR RECOMMENDS: Exuviance Vitamin C 20%
Serum Capsules, £59

X MARKS THE SPOT. In 2019 t he
market was flooded with targeted
blemish treatments. Our favourites
to date are ZitStickas: small, clear,
adhesive patches with 24
microda r ts t hat dispense a
cocktail of spot-fighting
ingredients including salicylic
acid, niacinamide and the
anti-microbial oligopeptide-76.
BAZAAR RECOMMENDS: ZitSticka
Killa patches, £27 for eight

YEAST. In the

has been somewhat
controversially
touted for its
skin-conditioning
qualities and its role as
an antioxidant. It is a
live organism though,
so we recommend
utilising it in the form
of prebiotics, rather
than directly on
the skin.

ZINC, a useful ingredient in
sunscreen that also makes its
way into areas of skincare. ‘I call
it the healing mineral, because
those prone to blemishes and
acne report an improvement
after using it,’ says Ayodele.
BAZAAR RECOMMENDS: La
Roche-Posay Serozinc Mist, £10
