A selfie-snapping moment
near the end pays homage to
Insomniac’s Spider-Man.
S
hortly after Spider-Man: Far
From Home became the most
financially successful
Spider-flick to date, news
broke that ol’ webhead would
no longer be part of the MCU. Thankfully
Disney and Sony have since sorted
things out and we’ll be getting a third
film – because a series this good
deserves to continue.
Picking up eight months after
Avengers: Endgame which (spoiler
alert!) saw half of life in the universe
snapped back into existence by Tony
Stark’s act of self-sacrifice, in Far From
Home Peter Parker and his classmates
are whisked away to Europe for a
school trip. But Peter’s plans to take
the summer off are interrupted by Nick
Fury, who needs Earth’s remaining
Avenger to team up with Jake
Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio and take down the
Elementals threatening the planet.
A blast from start to finish, Far From
Home deals with the fallout from
Endgame in meaningful (and hilarious)
ways – most notably the
effect that the loss of
Stark’s father figure has
on Peter, and the
responsibility he must
shoulder in the void left
behind. Jake Gyllenhaal,
meanwhile, is clearly
having a hoot as
Mysterio – a classic
comic book character
satisfyingly updated for
the 21st century.
It’s a film that
occasionally prioritises
hollow CGI spectacle
over deeper character-
driven action beats, and
there are twists you’ll
see coming a mile off,
but Far From Home
proves Marvel Studios
understands Stan Lee
and Steve Ditko’s
wall-crawler like few
others. Jordan Farley
Spider-Man:
Far From Home
Spidey’s sequel is a web of wonder
blu-rays
coming soon
PEAKY
BLINDERS S5
In the fifth season of the
gangster series the Wall
Street Crash hits the family
business, and Tommy’s
political career takes off.
ANNA
Luc Besson directs
this stylish thriller that owes
a debt to Besson’s own La
Femme Nikita. In fact, you’re
probably better off watching
Leon (see above) instead.
THE SOUVENIR
Exquisitely made,
British drama about a
young wannabe filmmaker
who gets tangled up with a
dashing, but damaged man.
Highbrow brilliance.
DOOM:
ANNIHILATION
Direct-to-disc sequel to
2005’s Dwayne Johnson-
starring Doom. Let’s just
say Id and Bethesda weren’t
involved, and leave it at that.
APOLLO 11
Documentary that
uses restored archive
footage and previously
unreleased audio recordings
to bring the moon landing to
the screen like never before.
YESTERDAY
Danny Boyle’s
high-concept romcom
imagines a world where only
one man can remember The
Beatles. Hardly fab, but
charming enough.
LEON:
DIRECTOR’S
CUT
Luc Besson’s hitman classic
is the thinking man’s action
movie. But you’re better off
watching the theatrical cut.
NIGHTBREED
Master of
horror Clive Barker made
Nightbreed shortly after
Hellraiser. Panned at the
time, this two-hour director’s
cut is a superior chiller.
THE
INVITATION
Karyn Kusama’s ace horror,
starring Logan Marshall-
Green, has been on Netflix
for ages, but the extras-
packed Blu is worth the cost.
BATMAN
BEYOND: THE
COMPLETE SERIES
A canonical follow-up to the
Batman Animated Series,
this should please anyone
craving a new Arkham game.
