T
he disadvantage of so much
content releasing on
streaming services is that it’s
easy for a gem to fall between
the cracks. So don’t miss this
slice of Lovecraftian body horror from
British filmmaker Babak Anvari.
Armie Hammer stars as Will, a
bartender whose life is going nowhere.
One night a brutal fight erupts, leaving
a regular with a gaping wound in his
face and an underage kid without a
phone. Keeping hold of the device with
the intention of returning it, Will starts
to receive disturbing messages about
unholy rituals that cause him to
hallucinate cockroaches. But the
hallucinations become all too real...
Also along for the ride are Dakota
Johnson, as Will’s girlfriend, and
Deadpool 2’s Zazie Beetz, as Will’s best
friend. Like any classic Lovecraftian
spine-tingler, it’s a film that’s small in
scale but big on ideas – it always feels
like events beyond Will’s
comprehension are
unfolding just outside the
frame. Understanding
that true fear often lies
in the unknown, Wounds
has it where it counts –
it’s unsettling, building
towards a batshit ending
that’s worth the time
investment alone.
Hammer proves he’s
an underrated actor
here, tapping into the
rotten core beneath
Will’s charming exterior.
But Wounds is based on
a novella and it shows,
with barely enough story
to justify the 96-minute
runtime. It might not land
a critical blow, then, but
Wounds could well leave
a mark. Jordan Farley

Edgerton. Think Game Of Thrones, with fewer dragons.
