in the paintings feel real, they’re pre-
sented in a way that no camera can
see. Photography doesn’t allow a pic-
ture that so nicely balances artificial
light sources with low levels of ambi-
ent light; only a painter could organize
and tailor them to work so well
together. “Just like any of the arts, I’m
trying, in a good way, to manipulate
the viewer into feeling, thinking and
seeing something,” Frederick says.
“That’s what you as the viewer are
reacting to. With music, it’s the same
kind of thing. My language includes
cultural references, time of day, day-
light, inside light, streetlights and so
on. All those things trigger something
in the viewer.”
Far beyond Frederick’s evident
technical prowess, it’s this ability to
connectwithandmovetheviewer
thatgiveshisworkitsextraordinary
lifeandconviction.
