astoday,miningrankedhighin
occupationaldangers.Asa newlyhired
writer,I learnedaboutmineroofscol-
lapsing,mineexplosionsanddiseases
causedbythecontinualbreathinginof
coaldust,butcounteringthisdespair
werethebrightcolorsandcaptivating
expressionsofthewatercolorportraits
thatanagencyartistpastedonthe
wallsabovehisdesk.Theyshonewith
promise—likewindowsofhope.
