DAPHNE GUINNESS, THE ECCENTRIC

As far as truisms like “birds of a feather fl ock together” go, singer, designer
and socialite Daphne Guinness stands at the centre of the statement. During
summertime retreats in Spain, her neighbour and mother’s confi dante was
Salvador Dalí. “I’m used to eccentric people. I remember looking at his mous-
tache and thinking, ‘That’s really rather amazing.’ He was a dandy, a pea-
cock,” she told the Times. Her own tight-knit friend circle included Lee Alex-
ander McQueen, Isabella Blow and David Bowie—makers of the zeitgeist
then and keepers of cool ever since. Did the larger-than-life company she keep
trickle into her preference for a personal style of crazy, cool and fantastical?

IRIS APFEL, THE ICON

As the only child at family gatherings, Iris Apfel often passed her time playing with her grandmother’s fabric rem-
nants. “Looking back, it’s very clear playing this way honed my eye and gave me a very deep interest in fabric,” she
says in her book Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon. Her eye for pattern, print and colour translated into her much admired,
inimitable, eclectic style—her Instagram bio reads ‘More is More and Less is a Bore’. Apfel has been the subject of an
exhibit at the Costume Institute, a documentary titled Iris, has created two ‘Styled by Iris Apfel’ Barbie dolls, starred
in ad campaigns for Macy’s and Kate Spade, debuted a line of jewellery for Rara Avis on the Home Shopping Network
and at the age of 97 has been signed by IMG for their roster of models. “When the fun goes out of dressing, you might
as well be dead. You need to pursue your own fancy,” she famously said.—Priyanka Khanna
