It’s a show the likes of
which you haven’t seen
before – and it’s about
gin. We s u s p e c t t h a t t h e
very charismatic Ryan
at Old Young‘s Distillery
can make a song and
dance about anything,
b u t, w h e n h e’s f a s t
talking his way through
a tasting of the award-
winning gins that come
from James Young’s
distilleries, his passion
shows. Flashes of silver
and tattoo punctuate the provocative patter – the dessert gin
Pavlova is described as “kinky sex wrapped up in a bottle” –
but there’s also great pride in the fact that this is the Swan Valley’s
first distillery and produces award-winning vodkas, infusions and
gins. You’ll want to buy all the gins – and the prized Journeyman
whiskey – you sample. Pack bubble-wrap.

The Swan Valley
Indulge at an award-winning winery
What began as a winery way back over a century ago
was transformed into a hospitality complex five years ago.
Now, Mandoon Estate, arguably Western Australia’s most
awarded winery in the last five years and known for its cabernet
sauvignons, offers much more than wine – there’s a brilliant
apple cider that’s made with “nothing but apples” alongside
eight to nine beers out of its brew house. The estate is strewn with
dining outlets – the LLawn offers casual dining (and makes a great
wedding venue), while the Wild Swan restaurant has a chef’s hat
commendation for its fine-dining menu. The best part, you can
also take a boat from Perth to the property’s jetty – it’s a beautiful
three-hour ride.
