How to Compose
How can you create an arrangement of paint, collage, and drawing
that looks good? Alternately, how do you avoid your mixed-media
collage from looking as if you just stuck on a load of junk?
Composition is a tricky issue. Opinions about balance, flow,
rhythm, focal points, mood, and meaning vary considerably from
one person to the next. What appears in balance to one person
may seem out of whack to another. Unless the meaning of a piece
is spelled out very obviously, there can be as many meanings as there
are viewers. There are "rules," but an artist is free to ignore them.
Just be prepared for the criticism if you adopt a more risk-taking
approach.
