RAUL JIMENEZ
MAN OF THE MATCH
BY JAMES NURSEY
ASHLEY BARNES is on fire for
Burnley, but it was Raul Jimenez
who kept his cool to earn Wolves
a draw.
Jimenez won and converted a
stoppage-time penalty after Barnes
put the Clarets ahead early on.
Burnley’s players used cold towels
to combat 30-degree heat at
Molineux and
Wolves were
made to
sweat, boss
Nuno
Espirito
Santo for
once not
appearing to have the answers.
With Clarets skipper Ben Mee
expertly marshalling the visitors,
Nuno’s men became increasingly
frustrated at failing to create many
clear-cut chances.
An unbeaten home record
stretching back to January looked to
be at an end, with their
seventh game this
month – a heavy
schedule because of
Europa League ties –
seeming set to take its
toll.
Wolves started slowly
and were fortunate to be
just 1-0 down at the
break.
But they piled on the
pressure after Adama
Traore’s late introduction
and it eventually told in
added time to end Burn-
ley’s dogged resistance.
Referee Craig Pawson
and unleash a 25-yard shot which
flew into the bottom corner of the
net for his 13th goal this year. It was
an audacious finish from a striker
full of confidence and in the
form of his life.
The visitors nearly doubled
their lead four minutes later
when Mee’s header from
McNeil’s cross came back
off the bar, hit a defender
and bounced back towards
goal. Keeper Rui Patricio,
who saved Paul Pogba’s
penalty in Wolves’ previous
home game, did well to claw
away the ball.
He then made an even better
save to deny Chris Wood, who
spun Bennett and thumped in a
right-foot shot.
Wolves failed to have a single
shot on target in a poor first half
and Jimenez summed up their
display by slicing over just
before the break.
The home team got
steadily better after the
interval though, as they
moved the ball quicker.
But the Clarets still
had chances,
McNeil, Wood
and Barnes all
having attempts
on goal.
Wolves’ pressure
eventually told in
stoppage time when
Pawson pointed to the
spot following a rash foul
by Pieters on Jimenez,
with the striker having
his back to goal.
The Mexican, who
moments earlier saw his
low shot on the turn hit
a post, converted for
his sixth goal of the
season and his first in
the Premier League
this term.
pointed to the spot after a foul by
Erik Pieters, a decision confirmed
by VAR, leaving Jimenez to calmly
roll in the penalty for Wolves’ third
successive league draw.
Wanderers will be wary of
suffering the same fate as Burnley,
who last term went out of the Europa
League in the play-off round and
picked up only one point from their
first five Premier League games.
But the manner of this comeback
sets up Wolves for the second leg of
their qualifier with Torino on
Thursday, which they go into with a
3-2 lead from their visit to Italy.
And they are unlikely to have to
face a striker as in form as Barnes.
Only Sergio Aguero and Sadio Mane
have more Premier League goals in
- He scored three in Burnley’s
opening two games and added
another in the 13th minute
yesterday.
Barnes (below) began the move
with a lay-off for Ashley Westwood,
before chasing after the midfielder’s
forward pass.
Ryan Bennett failed to clear and
Dwight McNeil
headed the ball
on for Barnes
to chest down
FACT ROOM...
Wolves have drawn their first
three games of a league
campaign for the first time since
1938-39, when they ended up
finishing second in the top-flight.
Burnley are winless in their last
five away games at Wolves in the
top-flight (W1 D4), with their last
such victory there coming back in
September 1973.
Wolves are unbeaten in their last
10 home games in the Prem (W6
D4); their longest run without
defeat in the top-flight since
between April and October 1979
(also 10 games).
Burnley have only won one of the
last five Prem away games in
which they’ve scored the opening
goal (D3 L1), including none of the
last three.^
Wolves’ equaliser in the 97th
minute was just their second
shot on target in the game, with
their first of the contest coming
in the 87th minute.
