Fans’ support

helps Vinnie

HARDMAN Vinnie Jones
has sent thanks to his fans
for their “kind thoughts”
after the death of his
“incredible” wife.
The ex-Wimbledon and
Wales footballer lost his
sweetheart Tanya, 53, last
month after she fought a
six-year battle with cancer.
Lock Stock And Two
Smoking Barrels actor
Jones, 54, said: “Through
this devastating time, you
have helped us enormously
with this heavy grief.”
He had referred to Tanya
as his “perfect match”.

Take 2 plants

twice a day..

DOCTORS are prescribing
plants instead of pills in a
new scheme for patients.
A GP practice is using
the feelgood effects of
greenery and gardening to
treat people with anxiety,
depression and loneliness.
Patients are given a
plant to care for, then bring
to the surgery’s garden, in
Hulme, Manchester.
They can then join in
communal and social
gardening activities.
Dr Philippa James said:
“Two hours a week in a
green space can lift mood.”

IT has been the hottest ever
August bank holiday weekend,
and we are set to see more
sunshine this week.
A record temperature of 33.3C
was recorded at Heathrow, South
West London, the Met Office said.
It beat the previous record of
31.6C in 2001, also at Heathrow.
Elsewhere, the mercury hit 27.1C
in Hawarden, North East Wales,
and 26.2C in Prestwick, South
Ayrshire, yesterday afternoon.
The late summer sunshine is
the result of warm air being
dragged up over the UK from
France, and it comes at the end of
a wet and chilly month.
Met Office meteorologist Sarah
Kent said there is more heat on
the way today. She warned: “It
could be a maximum of 33C
today. There is a lot of sunshine
about to be had, but people need
to exercise some common sense.”
Ms Kent urged people to cover
up at the beach, stay hydrated
and listen to coastguard advice.
Around one million revellers
set to attend the second day of
the Notting Hill Carnival in West
London today are being advised
to drink plenty of water.
Yesterday it emerged that a
man died in the sea near Hell’s
Mouth, Cornwall. The coastguard
and RNLI plucked the local, 63,
from the water on Friday, but he
did not survive. Devon and Corn-
wall Police said he was “a regular
swimmer at that location”.
In South Wales, a woman was
rescued after falling 15ft down a
cliff on Saturday evening. The
victim was airlifted to hospital
with serious injuries from
Mewslade Bay in Rhossili on the
Gower Peninsula.
And in Essex emergency crews
were called to the seafront after
getting several reports of people
coughing and struggling to
breathe. The cause is unknown
and is being investigated.
Speculation of a fuel spill was
not confirmed by police nor the
ambulance service.
And while the bank holiday
weekend was bathed in sunshine,
forecasters are not confident that
Britain will enjoy an Indian
summer. Tomorrow will be
mainly dry and sunny but there
will be more in the way of cloud.
Wednesday is set to be fairly
unsettled with outbreaks of rain,
which could be heavy at times in
northern areas, and lighter in the
south. Some sunny spells are
possible as well. Thursday looks
to be breezier, but dry and bright.
