I guess I’m evolving. For a
long, long time, I was inclined
to dislike prequel, sequel, and
revival series, simply because
they are so often created to
milk the financial potential of
the source material. General-
ly, the sequel or prequel didn’t
need to be written; the story
did not need to be told. But
the show was made anyway,
as a kind of fan service.
I have one title for you:
“AfterMASH.” And I have an-
other: “The Carrie Diaries.”
But it seems as though re-
boot fever isn’t a fever any-
more. It’s just the way TV and
the rest of pop culture operate
now. Shows never really end;
they just return to TV in dif-
ferent iterations, with no par-
ticular shame attached to
them. That’s the way it is,
from the lousy shows to the
good ones.
“Breaking Bad” is on my
mind. One of the finest TV

dramas of all time has spawned a beloved prequel series, “Better Call Saul,” and, coming to Netflix on Oct. 11, a sequel movie called “El Cami- no: A Breaking Bad Movie.” The sequel movie, written and directed by “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan, is about Jesse Pinkman (played by Aaron Paul) right after the events of the (supposed) series finale. Here’s the Netflix sum- mary: “In the wake of his dra- matic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future.” There’s no word yet on whether other “Breaking Bad” characters, in- cluding those played by Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, or Bryan Cranston, will appear in the movie. “All I can say, I think people will be really happy with what they see,” Paul told The New York Times. Meanwhile, a prequel se-

ries to another one of TV’s best-ever dramas, “The Sopra- nos,” is also on the way — in this case, to movie theaters. Called “The Many Saints of Newark,” and set in the 1960s, it will be released in Septem- ber 2020. And the “Downton Abbey” movie will be in theaters on Sept. 20. Next thing you know, we’ll be hearing about a sequel series to that other great modern drama series, “Mad Men,” called “Sally!” or “Blanken- ship: The Early Years,” or “Not Great, Bob: A Pete Campbell Mystery.” So I’m going to stop with the stink eye when I watch these revisitations. It’s time for me to drop my bias. I here- by swear that I will no longer automatically look down on a show or movie sequel, prequel, or revival. And I will no longer presume that the end is really the end.

Q.I’ve been with my boyfriend for 2½ years. We moved in together a year and a half ago and everything changed. When we started dating,hewasromantic.Hewasalwaysphysi- cally affectionate and took me out alone and with his friends. But then that stopped. The thing is, we live in a different country (far away from our home country) and I don’t have friends here. I always feel lonely, sad, and bored and he knows it. We’re always fighting about going out. He says he’s tired and doesn’t want to stay up late or spend the money. One time his friends asked him out and he said he’d rather get sleep, but I asked him if I could go. He said it was all guys and I wasn’t invited. I was upset and angry. He always has an excuse to stay home. Even when I ask him to go to the grocery store, he says he can’t. I love clubbing, but he says he’ll never go. He’d rather come home, talk for a bit, and then talk on the phone and watch videos. Also, he doesn’t say “I love you” anymore I’m just tired — and I think I want to break up. I can’t move out; I don’t have enough money, and it’s pretty difficult to move into another room. Is there any chance our relationship will be good again? STUCK

A.“I’m just tired — and I think I want to break up.” Look at you, doing my work for me. You already know what you want; the issue is logis- tics. How do you share an apartment after a breakup? How do you move (or ask him to move out) if you don’t have the money to cov- er things on your own? I don’t have easy an- swers to those questions, but I suggest looking for sublets and asking anyone you know to tell you the best way to find housing where you live. It might be more possible — and afford- able — than you think. You can also have a mature conversation with your boyfriend about what you want and how to separate. Maybe he sees the writing on the wall and has already thought about other options. I mean, it’s clear you want different things. It’s time to give each other space to get them. No matter where you live, you need to start looking for a group of friends because you

shouldn’t depend on one person to be your main connection to the outside world. Maybe you can invite some people from work to din- ner. Or perhaps there’s an organization in town that caters to newcomers. Sign up for free activities. Take advantage of apps that connect people with platonic intentions. You’re a social person. You’ll want community whether you’re coupled or not. MEREDITH

People are getting worked up over him tell- ing her “no.” That’s not what I’m reading from the letter. He didn’t want to do groceries with her, and he doesn’t like clubbing. The only time he told her “no” was when she wasn’t even invited. He’s not going out without her, he’s just too tired at the end of the day to take her out. CONCERNEDCITIZENONDUTY

^I get how she is feeling. I am in a similar situation — I moved far for someone. I enjoy going out and doing things, while he works a laborious job and doesn’t want to do much when he is not working. Us picking a day to be “my day” worked wonders for me.... Sunday is now my day and we do pretty much what I want. That means I leave him alone and don’t pester him to do much the other days. Life changing. KG311
