Benefits of
chores for kids
Having your toddler help
set the table, pack away
the socks or put his toys
away isn’t just keeping him
occupied or assisting you,
it’s one of the first steps to his
future success as an adult.
Julie Lythcott Haims, former
dean of freshmen at Stanford
University and author of How
to Raise an Adult, recently
shared this science in her TED
Talk on how parents can raise
successful children (without
over-parenting), saying:
“Professional success in life...
comes from having done
chores as a kid”, adding
that the earlier you start
encouraging this behaviour,
the better. She bases this
on the Harvard Grant Study
that’s been almost 80 years
in the making and looks at
how early life experiences
have impacted health
and ageing over time. The
study, which started in 1938,
has expanded to include
the original participants’
offspring (who are now in
their 50s and 60s).
This, and other research,
reveals that those who are
involved with chores from an
early age go on to become
employees who collaborate
well and are empathetic to
others. Plus, these children
are more likely to work on
tasks independently, as well
as within a team framework.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAYTIME

Numerous research studies
and experts agree on
the importance of play
for growing children. In
fact, because play has
been shown to have a
significant impact on
child development, the
United Nations High
Commission for Human
Rights recognises it as an
essential right of every child.
However, in our time-
starved society, doctors are
now prescribing playtime
for stressed, depressed
children and their equally
anxious, always-connected
parents, according to the
latest Flux Trends 2019

report. Generation
Alpha (the children
of the millennial
generation) have, on
average, about 12
hours less playtime
than their ambitious
millennial parents
did, with education-packed
agendas that leave little
time for fun and games.
Participating in play
activities has been shown
to improve cognitive ability,
problem solving and social
skills while reducing stress.
Another South African
study suggests 24% of
school children in Grades
8 to 11 have experienced
feelings of depression
and hopelessness.
Engaging in shared play
time has a significant role
in parent-child bonding
and provides invaluable
opportunities for parents to
model positive behaviour.
