FAME

We recently heard from kit car show
man, and all round industry fan
John Cooke, to talk about the sale
of his prized Hawk FIA 289 Cobra
replica. Fitted with all the trick Hawk
and Hoyle suspension parts and an
appropriate 360bhp Ford 302cu in V8,
this replica is one many of you may
remember from the various shows
‘Cookie’ was involved in.
John’s first build was a mini stock
car, but it was this build that pushed
him onto his first kit, a Rickman
Ranger in 1989. This car was
subsequently followed by a Tiger and

First built in 1981, Mark Clough’s John
Eales tuned Rover V8 powered NG TC
won many trophies when it raced in
period under original owner/builder
Alan Dry.
Built to high specification from
all-new parts that included a Quaife
limited slip differential, Rover SD1
5-speed gearbox and MGB V8 rear axle,
it’s still quick to this day.

a couple of Hawk Cobra replicas – the
latter being the FIA he still owns
today. Always passionate about kit
cars, in 1991 John began promoting
the scene through his shows at venues
which included Exeter, Peterborough,
Detling, Harrogate, Chatham, Ashford
and Lydd. By the end of his 11-year
stint, in 2012, John managed to host
an impressive 98 shows – 75 of which
being kit car focused.
For those interested in purchasing a
Cobra built by a kit car juggernaut, it
is priced at £40,000. Interested parties
can call John on 07976 415106.

Since purchasing the car in 2014,
Mark has continued to press the
38-year-old car whenever he can.
While the TC no longer races
competitively, it isn’t averse to the
odd track day at either of Mark’s
nearest Knockhill or Kames circuits.
However, Mark mostly likes to take
the classic racer on country runs
when the weather permits.
