Wayne’s Haynes Roadster is a common sight at shows. Intatrim seats are a new addition.

Wayne has done all the work himself.

LSD and TC keep the car in shape. TVR V8 is quite the powerplant.
Ducktail spoiler is an iconic touch. Type-3 variant engine sits low.

Richard hopes to drive his Dax Rush down to Greece.

When Richard Pope built his first
Dax Rush in 1995, he decided that
Pinto power was no match for real
V8 muscle.
In 2003 he decided to take on a
new build that all centred around a
TVR tuned Rover V8 which originally
saw service in a 170mph Griffith. The
process took ten years in all, but in
essence Richard built the car twice.

Chris Mills purchased his Covin
Porsche replica in 2003 to restore it to
his own tastes. This meant modifying
it until it looked more like an original
’80s 964 generation 911.
Its alloys are not only the same
but each also sits at the correct
camber, the original flag mirrors have
been replaced with more accurate tear
drop items and, despite being two

We’re used to seeing Wayne Sunman
and his Haynes Roadster at shows,
which is unsurprising really as he
genuinely takes it out on as many
weekend runs as he can.
The build began around six years
ago with Wayne fabricating the chassis
to book specification, but since then he
went a little off piste by using Mazda
MX-5 componentry instead of the
typical Sierra bits.
Since getting the car on the
road two years ago he’s focused on
improving the kit, bit by bit, with his
most recent addition at this KitFest
meeting being a pair of Intatrim seats
and a set of stickier tyres.
There’s still more to come and we’ll
have to wait and see whether he was
tempted by the draw of a turbo kit.

The first assembly was to get
through IVA and the second to
properly detail and finish the car.
Richard hasn’t taken the mad
powerplant for granted and the Dax
makes use of a Quaife limited slip
differential and a Racelogic traction
control system. He’s also doubled the
car’s fuel capacity, which makes it
much more usable on road trips.

cylinders down, the VW Type 3
engine looks more in keeping with
the Porsche aesthetic. The Porsche
bits continue underneath too and,
with its Porsche 924 front assembly
and servo assisted brakes, it’s
apparently a tidy handler.
It’s still a work in progress with a
944 rear assembly to come, but Chris
very much enjoys his weekend toy.

Chris’s Covin has often fooled people into believing it is the real thing.
