KIT BUILD

Revell only offer one aircraft choice in their kit, a
Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2 from Stab.II/JG53, as fl own by
Gruppenkommandeur Hptm. H. Bretnütz, St Omer-Arques,
May 1941. Being such an early aircraft, the fi nish is the
classic combination of RLM65/RLM02/RLM71, all of the
colours being from the Gunze Sangyo Mr. Hobby range of
acrylics. Initially, I had planned to soft-mask the camoufl age
with Blue-Tack sausages, but in the end decided to paint
the splinter pattern freehand, heavily thinned paint, low
air pressure and my Procon Boy airbrush fi tted with a .3
mm head assembly and needle, making easy work of it.
When it came to the mottling, the paint was thinned with
around 70% Mr. Color Levelling Thinner and then sprayed
at around 10psi, tiny dots being applied and then enlarged
as necessary. Always my favourite part of a German aircraft
build, this was a fun part of this little project as well! Once
happy with the paintwork, everything was sprayed with
Gunze Sangyo GX Clear and then left to dry out for an hour
ready for decalling. We are now 8 hours into this build,
including drying times...
