W
orking in a
testosterone-filled
environment was an
everyday occurrence
for Michelle Keegan filming Our Girl.
So she wasn’t fazed on the set of
new comedy Brassic, where she’s
the only main female character.
“I’m used to being one of the only
girls on set. It’s constant fun, they’re
a great group of lads,” she says.
Michelle, 32, plays Erin in the
Sky One comedy, which is billed as
an edgy new original about a group
of working-class friends. “The script
won me over,” she adds. “When
I got sent the first few episodes I
remember laughing
out loud and it had
me hooked.”
Here, she talks
about hanging out
with the lads and her
character’s unique
fashion sense...Hi Michelle! How
have you found
working with all
the guys?
It’s been absolutely
brilliant. I had so
much fun. It’s weird- the past few jobs
I’ve had over the last
few years
have all been
working with
lads. I’ve spent
so much of my
time working on Our Girl and that
was with pretty much all guys, so
Brassic didn’t feel that different.
Did you find it hard to keep
them in check?
On set they were all really
professional and wanted to do a
great job. Off set we had a really
good laugh together – they’ve all
got a really good sense of humour.
They could be naughty on set,
though. We laughed a lot.
How would you describe
Erin’s style?
I love Erin’s wardrobe! The
ladies who did the costumes
for Erin were so cool and on
it. I thought it was a very 80s
vibe and that’s exactly what
they wanted for her. I was
like, “Brilliant, I love the 80s
so bring it on!” So I got some
Dr Martens, over-the-knee
socks and I had my hair curly.
It’s a completely different look
to anything I’ve ever done.
Is fashion her armour?
I think so. She uses clothes
as a way of expressing
herself. I love that.Have you learnt
anything about yourself
doing this?
I’ve never done comedy
before so I’ve learnt that
it’s something I really enjoy
and definitely want to do
more of. It’s opened the door
for me. It’s a lot harder than
doing all the dramatic stuff,
which might sound odd, but it is.
So you’d be up for slipping
into Erin’s Dr Martens for
another series of Brassic?
Oh my God, yes! I’d love it! I’ve
had the most amazing time. I can’t
wait to see it. Even watching all the
lads on set I’ve been laughing out
loud, so I can only imagine how
funny it’s going to be on screen.
Has your success lived up to
your expectations of what fame
would be like?
Yeah, it’s so much more than what
I expected, definitely. I feel so lucky- I have to pinch myself all the time.
