New! Magazine – 19 August 2019

(Romina) #1
How thrilled are you
about your role in
UglyDolls, Kelly?
I was bawling when I
got the chance to do it
because I thought it was
so sweet. Then they told
me I had Moxy, who is the
lead role and that was
rad! Her character is
really similar to mine in
real life. She’s a little bit
more over the top. And
she was pink, which my
five-year-old daughter
was so excited about.
Tell us a bit more
about Moxy...
She’s super hopeful, super
optimistic, always glass
half full even when things
are down. She’s the
cheerleader of hope. She
just wants to have a

purpose, to be found
by a human and get
to be their doll.
What was it like to
sing in the film?
The songs are
so empowering.
They’re straight
up out of a Kelly
Clarkson catalogue.
There are some
funny ones, like
Nick Jonas’ Ugly
Truth – it’s horrible,
but hilarious.
And why will
audiences like it?
It’s not just for kids

  • it’s for adults too.
    It’s funny and it’s got
    so much heart to it.
    There are sensitive
    moments too. It’s
    a feelgood film.

50 YEARS OF SHOOT!
Bear with us. What looks like a
football annual adorned with the
greatest players from days gone
by, is, erm, just that. But with the
Premier League kicking off again
and the Lionesses doing us proud
at the Women’s World Cup, what
better time to fall back
in love with the
beautiful game?
This new book
delves into the glory
days of Shoot!
magazine, which
celebrates its 50th
anniversary this year.

Once the bible for all
things footie (much like
new! is to the showbiz
world now), Shoot! would
regularly come up with
cracking articles, interviews and
profiles on the likes of Gary Lineker
and Harry Redknapp –
and some of the best
are reprinted here.
We certainly got a kick
out of it.

50 Years Of Shoot! is on
sale from 22 August,

If you’ve got a child, you’ve probably got an UglyDoll. The
latest toy phenomenon is so big there’s even a movie coming
out this week – with the cream of the celebrity crop lining up
to voice the characters.
Singer Kelly Clarkson, who takes the lead role of Moxy,
and the second hottest Jonas Brother Nick, who plays vain
Lou, are among those on the cast list.
Here, they tell us a little bit more...

UglyDolls is in cinemas on 16 August

DOING IT FOR

THE KIDS

Nick, you play Lou.
What drew you to
the character?
I just loved this
message of
accepting who
you are and
knowing that
things that are
different about
us make us
unique. And
I loved being
Lou because
he’s perfect, or
so he thinks...
Could you relate to
playing the villain
a teeny bit?
If I haven’t had coffee
in the morning I can
be a bit of a villain, so
it wasn’t hard. Deep
down Lou just really
wants to be loved and

accepted for who he
is. Even through all the
perfect hair, perfect
clothes, he’s got a lot
of things about him
he’d like to change.
What was it like singing
in the film?
It was a bit like musical
theatre, which is where
I started. It’s very
different to when I’m
recording a song on my
own or with my brothers.
What do families have
to look forward to in
UglyDolls?
They’re gonna love the
scale of it, the vibrant
colours and everything
else. It’s one you must
go and see in the
cinema. Just go be in
the seat and party like
it’s a rock concert!
