Brian Chesky and Joe
Gebbia, the founders of
Airbnb, originally dubbed
their idea AirBed&Breakfast—a
combo of air bed, which they
relied on for their own house
guests, and bed and breakfast.
The name shifted to the snappier
Airbnb, where few air mattresses
can be found (thankfully).

The polished-aluminum,
sausage-shaped Airstream
is unmistakable. The
company was the brainwave of
Wally Byam, who built the first
prototypes out of Masonite in his
California backyard in the late
1920s. He published a magazine
selling a “how-to” kit for ambitious
customers eager to build their
own trailer. In 1936, Byam
introduced the iconic design, the
Airstream Clipper, named after
the first transatlantic seaplane,
and sold it for US$1,200.Everything you didn’t kno candy,
