NEWMARKET REPORT
ISSUE 178 RACING AHEAD
David Youngmanwas delighted to see two of
the sport’s biggest names in action
Gosden’s
stars back
on track
I
T was great seeing both TOO
DARN HOT and ENABLE winning
recently. Too Darn Hot will stay at
7f for the time being but may go
back to an easy mile later in the
season. Enable had really only started
to come to herself a couple of weeks
before her winning appearance in the
Coral Eclipse. She really came alive
when John Gosden started working
her on the grass gallops and hopefully
she will come on a lot for the race.
WILLIAM and Mo Haggas were very
disappointed not to be able to contin-
ue with the training career of SEA OF
CLASS but the daughter of Sea The
Stars suffered bad colic and is in inten-
sive care at the equine hospital here in
Newmarket. It is hoped she can be
saved to become a lovely Broodmare
in the future.
CHARLIE Appleby was disappointed
with MASAR in his recent race as he
had been right back to his best here at
HQ on the gallops. He has now been
retired to stud. AL SUHAIL is a two-
year-old doing well in the Appleby
string and the son of Dubawi has
impressed me in his work recently.
SIR Mark Prescott and his assistant
William Butler were very happy to see
LAND OF OZ win recently and get
Heath House back to winning ways
again. It has been a lean spell so far
this season, the horses were all scoped
and tested and nothing wrong was
found with any of them. They were
working well but not running up to
expectations at the races. Hopefully,
the stable will have many more win-
ners now.
I had the pleasure of going to see
ULYSSES at the stud recently and he is
doing very well indeed for the Cheve-
ley Park Stud. His offspring are mostly
like him, very correct and well put
together, I can't wait to see some of
them hit the track. I am certain some
of his youngsters will find their way
into training here at HQ with Sir
Michael Stoute as the master of
Freemason Lodge trained Ulysses to
perfection. I hope you like this photo
of me with him.
FORMER Henry Cecil-trained TWICE
OVER is doing very well at stud in
South Africa and his offspring are win-
ning nice races, he was a great
favourite of Sir Henry’s and the first
horse he went to see in the morning
when out on the yard.
FORMER Warren Place jockey Tom
Queally has been riding work recently
for Saeed Bin Suroor on THUNDER
SNOW. It would be nice to see Tom
pick up more rides, his career has
dipped since his days of riding the
great Frankel.
TRAINER Charlie Fellowes and the
team at Bedford Lodge had the
delight of seeing THANKS BE win at
Royal Ascot for them but it was unfor-
tunate the jockey Hayley Turner
picked up punishment for too many
smacks with the whip. The whip is a
much needed tool for a jockey and
many races would not have been won
in close finishes but for the use of it. It
is doubtful if Lester Piggott would
have won the Derby on either Roberto
or The Minstrel without the use of his
long tom as it was called in those
days.
