EBC Brakes Superbike Race Two
Race Two was interrupted by
a red flag. On the original start,
Beaubier grabbed the holeshot
and checked out on the field. On
lap 13, Beaubier had a 2.5-second
lead and looked comfortable, but
then the red flag flew.
Scholtz had gotten wide exit-
ing Turn Four and setting up for
Turn Five, braked while on the
curbing, and crashed into Airfence
soft barriers deployed in front of a
tire wall outside the corner. But
Scholtz said his Yamaha dislodged
an Airfence section and he slid
into the tire wall. Scholtz was slow
to get up and the Airfence needed
to be replaced, hence the red flag.
On the 10-lap restart, Elias
jumped out to lead while Beaubi-
er, Gerloff, and Herrin latched on.
There were passes from the restart
with Elias and Gerloff exchanging
the lead—and hand gestures with
Elias trying to get Gerloff to work
with him—on the first lap.
Elias recaptured the lead,
Beaubier took control of second
place, and then the two riders
swapped the top spots several
times, including three times in
just one run into and out of Turn
One! But with a lighter fuel load
and worn tires, Elias said he was
more comfortable than he was
with new tires and a full tank at
the start of the race and was able
to hold on and take his fifth vic-
tory of the season and the 30thMoto America win of his career.
“Of course, [the restart has]
been a big help,” said Elias. “I
don’t want to see that [crash], but
unfortunately it happened. When
we saw the red flag, I start to be
more comfortable like yesterday.
Same thing. I had to wait 12, 13
laps, 14 laps to start to be there.
When I enter in my feeling, in my
place, we could start to produce
something every lap. [Without the
restart] I didn’t know if I was able
to catch [Beaubier] or not because
he was so strong.” With the double
win, Elias increased his Champi-
onship lead from nine to 26 pointsafter 10 of 20 races.
Beaubier was on Elias' tail but
finished 0.303-second behind Elias
and less than 0.2-second ahead of
Gerloff in third. Herrin was a close
fourth until lap six, when he said
he made a mistake and ran wide;
he still finished fourth.
Beach fought front-end
chatter to score fifth. Lewis was
all over Beach but said he was
lacking acceleration, and he fin-
ished sixth. Seventh-place Gagne
was able to hold off eighth-place
Uribe. Orange improved one spot
to ninth, and Max Flinders was
10th on his Thrashed Bike Racing

Gillim took first place from Fong

riders were never more than a few
feet apart, but Gillim held on to
win his fourth race of the season
by 0.101-second over Fong.
“The first few laps were
amazing, but I started dropping
off pretty good,” said Gillim, who
started from pole. “Bobby [Fong]
was really pressuring me. I tried
to make sure I didn’t mess up.”
