employed on movementsof
London Underground‘S’stock
fromBombardier,Derby.
Thepair werepartofa
batchof65wagonsbuilt in
1974 by Fauvet GirelatDouai,
France, to designcode PIE431.
They wereowned by Traffic
Services Limited(TSL)and
marketed underthe‘Polybulk’
brand.
With apayload of58 tonnes,
they wereadvancedforthe
time whencomparedwith
equivalentBritish Rail-owned
covere dhoppers,which had
capacities of 21tons.
One major flowutilising
the hopperswasthe
exportofchina clay pellets
fromCornwall to Biberist,
Switzerland,the weekly service
generallyloading22to24
wagons.Inl ateryears the trains

FREIGHTLINER has operated
atest run in preparation forit
takingover the operation of
MendipRail aggregate trains
fromSomerset in November.
Thetest took placeovernight
on July 18-19 using Class 70
No.70003.
Thetrailing loadwasreported
to be 4,200tons,and although
pathedfor45mph maximum,
a21-minutelate startfrom
Mereheadwasturned into a
30-minuteearly arrivalatActon
yard.
Under thecontract
Freightliner haswon, it will


move around eightmilliontons
of stone annually fromWhatley
and Merehead quarriesto the
London areaforroad and other
construction projects.
When the dealwas
announced late in 2018,
the contra ct included the
purchase of the Class 59
fleet–Nos.59001-59005 and
59101-59104.
However, as these are30years
old and the Class 70s areunder-
utilised,Freightliner is likelyto
be lookingat various scenarios
and options,and thiscould
include the sale of the locos.
