Brown’s handiwork

of using the Samba as a minibus, he
sold the seats for £300 and then set
about refurbishing what was left.
Ron fitted a new headliner, replaced
the door cards and matched the new
coverings to the ‘pepper’ design of
the originals. He fitted new carpets
and added curtains, for yes you’ve
got it, the bus was to become a
‘Samba-Campa’.
‘So the units, Ron’, I ventured. ‘Oh,
I knocked those up one Saturday’,
came the reply. Supposedly
temporary, all these years later they
are still there, the oak ply having
mellowed with age and nowadays
offer the spirit of originality. Ron’s
the first to say that the interior
doesn’t suggest unbridled luxury,
but with a bed, storage for a cooker,
a set of drawers, room for a fridge
and so on, the Samba’s interior is
both dry and comfortable... ‘Just
enough to live in’, says Mr Brown
