I tapedthephotocopyontoa firmflatsurfaceandthentapeda(^1) sheetoftracingpaperoverthephotocopy.
I shot a photo of my Nike statue in raking
light in order to get a full range of values on
its surface. I then printed the image on office
copier paper.

I moved the
photocopy to the side
and taped a sheet of
translucent marker paper
over the tracing paper
with the islands I’d just
drawn. Using a red colored
pencil, I carefully retraced
all the shapes.
