With a sharp graphite pencil, I traced only the shadow shapes on the
photocopy. I didn’t draw any contours—just “islands” that encompass each
shadow shape. In at least one area, there’s a light island inside a shadow, so
I encircled that, too.4
I made sure I closed all the
shapes. There should be no lines
with visible beginnings or endings.
When completed, the traced drawing
resembled a series of irregular islands.6
Next, I began filling in all the islands with red
colored pencil.7
The result, Nike in Red Pencil (11x8½), is a radically
reduced image of the statue, consisting solely of shapes.
