Sunbeams charity ride
On the last Sunday in April, over 85 scooters from the British
Forces SC and the Cumbria Scooter Clubs Alliance carried
out a charity ride to Sunbeams Music Trust near Penrith.
R
iders from clubs scattered all over
Cumbria, plus others from Morecambe
and Annan, gathered on the Glebe at
Bowness-on-Windermere for 10:45am. Riding
a variety of machines from a 1965 Vespa to
the latest modern scooters, they then rode up
to Penrith to deliver the donation collected
from a small rally they hold each year in
Ambleside, in what they described as a whip-
round – but that doesn't do it justice.
What started as a one-off with a few mates
getting together to make a donation to a
local charity has grown into a yearly event,
supporting a great number of charitable
causes. Everyone I spoke to insisted that a
special mention be made of Cath Irwin who
organises it all every year with the support of
her husband, Alan.
The Sunbeams Trust was founded by special
needs teacher and musician Anne Mawson,
MBE in 1992, and helps all ages of children
and adults with disabilities. I have personal
experience of the children's sessions, as I go
every week with my daughter.
The effect on the kids is truly amazing.
Some of them have been through far more
in their short lives than most of us will in our
entire lifetime. You can see the weight of it
all in their faces, but when the Sunbeams
sessions start, it falls away and is replaced
with delight. It really is a magical place with an
extremely good vibe.
After the previous day’s atrocious weather,
it was warm and the sun shone. The scooters
were admired by all and some interesting paint
jobs were evident – including one that looked
like an original oily rag restoration (until you
got close). Another one featured Union Jacks
blowing in the breeze.
Along with a good number of Easter eggs, a
donation of £861.01 was gratefully received by
Liesl McViety (project manager) and Dr Anthony
Wolfe (Sunbeams treasurer), along with some
of the Sunbeams volunteers and a few of the
Sunbeamers themselves.
Copious amounts of scones, cake and tea
were consumed and after about an hour or so
the riders departed, leaving all at Sunbeams
very happy indeed!
