Are you ready?
What? Already! Wowza!
Where has the year gone?
B
ut yes, we were ready and waiting
for the promise of another brilliant
time in the company of some of the
smartest, friendliest people on the scene.
People who’d again travelled from all areas
of the country and even abroad to be part of
a great Weekender that’s now set in stone
as one of the country’s best contemporary
Modernist events.
The main venue was again the beautiful
Imperial Ballroom at the Grosvenor House
Hotel in the Lincolnshire seaside resort of Skeg
Vegas! As is the custom, the smart ‘Movers
and Groovers’ were again spoilt rotten over the
three nights by the DJs who spun the platters
that make you get up on your feet and do ‘Yo
Thang’! Music so good and so powerful that
it was like your feet had been taken over by a
pair of Mr HC Anderson’s red shoes, making it
almost impossible to sit down for too long.
One particular couple, who shall remain
nameless, must have gone through a pair of
shoes each night, as they wore two inches of
timber from the beautiful dance floor – and in
the process, winning the competition for best
‘Movers and Groovers’. They were very worthy
recipients of this year’s award, so well done
to Mr and Mrs Moore (whoops)!
The weather was kind to us on the Friday
and Saturday, but broke on Sunday just in time
to put a halt to the planned rideout, with many
of the attendees instead taking advantage of
the open mic DJ sessions that were performed
on the decks downstairs within the scooter
parts and vintage market.
I always like to hear the open micparticipants as they play for themselves, for
their own pleasure, and it’s a chance to hear
new or seldom played sounds which you
wouldn’t always hear at an evening session.
Tony Botta was the last to play on the Sunday
afternoon session.
While many, if not all of the ‘In Crowd’ had
left by this time to get a little rest and change
for the last evening’s event, nothing, and I
mean nothing was stopping Tony as he had
the time of his life playing to an audience of
traders packing up, a cleaner, a member of the
bar staff and a stray dog that had wandered
in! A fantastic set and one that I can say I was
honoured to be present for.
Sunday evening is always a great party and
a more relaxed affair; still smart, still well
attended, but more low-key, with a short pause
in the proceedings to award the trophies for
‘Best Vespa’, which this year was won by Jason
Morris with his modified Faro Basso, and the
‘Best Lambretta’, which went to Marcus Fox
with his 1962 Li150.
Then it was back to the DJs, who smashed it
until the very last record.
Fantastic! A whole year eagerly and excitedly
waiting for this superb event and it was all
over in the blink of an eye. But there’s always
next year!
Thanks to Joe Tucker, the DJs (day and
night), the traders (especially Scooteroller for
sponsoring the beautiful glass trophies), the
venue staff and most of all the ‘Smart People’.
