Actress jailed

for ‘largest’

benefits con

ONE of Britain’s worst-ever
benefit fraudsters has been
jailed for nearly six years
after stealing £740,000.
Amateur actress Ethel
McGill, 68, used her theat-
rical skills to feign dem -
entia and mobility issues
to get the cash.
She also claimed her
father’s war pension and
benefits for 12 years after
he died in 2004.
McGill, of Runcorn,
Cheshire, pleaded guilty to
14 offences and was
sentenced yesterday at
Liverpool crown court to
70 months.
Stephane Pendered, of
the CPS, said: “This is the
largest case of benefit
fraud by a single person
that I have prosecuted.”
Judge Steven Everett
told McGill: “Nobody,
including me, believes that
you are ill.”

Super-Earth

find in trio of

new planets

NASA’S alien-finder satel-
lite has discovered a super-
Earth 73 light years away.
Scientists say the temp -
erature of the planet –
slightly larger than Earth

  • could support life but its
    atmosphere is thought to
    be too dense.
It is one of three planets
    found by the Transiting
    Exoplanet Survey Satellite.
    The others are gaseous
    sub-Neptunes roughly
    twice the size of Earth.
All three orbit a star in
    the TOI-270 system.
    Maximilian Gunther, of
    Massachusetts Institute of
    Technology, said: “TOI-
    is a true Disneyland for
    exoplanet science – an
    exceptional laboratory.”
    TESS was launched last
    year to look for worlds
    around neighbouring stars
    that could support life.

EDITOR Duchess of Sussex

Vogue’s Meghan quizzes Michelle Obama on motherhood

THE Duchess of Sussex interviewed
Michelle Obama as the Duchess guest-edited
British Vogue.
The pals chatted about motherhood,
and former US first lady Michelle urged
Meghan and Prince Harry to “savour” the
“magical” early months of having a baby in
the house.
Michelle revealed: “Barack and I could lose
hours just watching [newborns] Malia and Sasha
sleep. We loved to listen to the little sounds

they’d make – especially the way they cooed
when they were deep into dreaming.
“Don’t get me wrong, early parenthood is
exhausting. I’m sure you know a thing or two
about that these days.
“I’m so excited for you and Harry to
experience that, Meghan. Savour it all.”
The Duchess, 37, was five months pregnant
with Archie when she started the project.
“By the time you hold this issue in your hands,
my husband and I will be holding our three-

month-old baby boy in ours,” she writes. The
September edition is the magazine’s most
important of the year and Meghan said: “I realise
the reach, and I see the opportunity to be a part
of fashion’s push for something greater, kinder,
more impactful.
“But I am also a little nervous to be boldly
asking the editor-in-chief, Edward Enninful,
whom I’ve only just met, to take a chance
on me.”
■ The September issue is out on Friday.

CHARLES BRONSON’S

EX-WIFE FOUND DEAD

BY STEPHEN WHITE
THE ex-wife of Charles Bronson – one of
the UK’s longest-serving prisoners – has
been found dead at her home.
Police said the death of former Coronation
Street actress Paula Williamson, 38, is not
being treated as suspicious.
A postmortem will take place to discover
how she died, officers said, adding: “The
family have asked for privacy.”
Friends of the convict said Bronson was
“upset and in shock” at Category A HMP
Woodhill in Milton Keynes.
The death of Paula, of Stoke-on-Trent, came
hours after it was revealed he plans to wed
again. The lifer, 66,
who has spent 44 years
in jail for robbery and
kidnap, is to marry a
pensioner named Joan
when he is freed.
Paula and Bronson
tied the knot behind
bars in November
2017, with him hand-
cuffed to a guard.
But the relationship
had already broken
down by July last year.
Snaps of her
emerged larking around with 24-year-
old Connor Boyes in Tenerife.
Bronson branded her a “drunken
tart” and him “brave”.
Paula later described how she
was “heartbroken” by the split.
They never consummated the
marriage behind bars, and last
month it was set to be annulled.
She said: “It’s sad. I’ve been
left with nothing. I’ve lost all my
work because I married this
man, as well as family and friends.”
Paula appeared in the ITV soap
three times between 2008 and 2012
as an unnamed nurse.
