Johnson ‘plays roulette’ with car jobs
VOTE PLEA MIchael Heseltine
An outrage if
PM imposes
catastrophe
on our nation
WHEN I look around the UK I
see the legacy built on our
years of economic partnership
with the European Union.
In places such as Birmingham
that legacy can be seen in a
regenerated city centre and the
thousands of jobs provided by
anchor employers such as
Jaguar Land Rover and Pirelli.
Britain’s industrial revival of
the 1980s and 1990s was based
on securing this country as a
stable base for manufacturing
at the heart of Europe, the
world’s largest marketplace.
Together, with our European
partners, we ended the long
years of decline and built a
modern, progressive and
prosperous democracy.
Now all that is at risk.
Daily we hear glib responses
from our political leaders about
how it would be the work of a
moment to renegotiate our
withdrawal agreement and how,
even if we couldn’t, no deal
would be an acceptable result.
Neither approach was put to
the voters in the referendum
and yet we are now told they
are the will of the people.
Economic ignorance and
contempt for the truth
marching forwards together.
They call the abandonment
of our treaty rights and
obligations with our European
partners patriotism when it is
an act of political and moral
vandalism on a truly epic scale.
We were told in 2016 that a
vote to Leave would be a vote
for a renegotiated relationship
with Europe, a fantastic new
trade deal – all the benefits of
EU membership, just none of
the irritating responsibilities.
Our nation stands on the
brink and the next few months
will determine the future of
generations to come.
It would be a democratic
outrage for a new Prime
Minister to impose a destructive
Brexit on the people without us
having the chance to be heard
through a final say referendum.
THREATENED The Vauxhall
car plant in Ellesmere Port
BY GRAHAM HISCOTT
Head of Business
BORIS Johnson has been accused
of playing “no-deal roulette” with
the livelihoods of Vauxhall workers.
The PM’s Brexit stance has
raised the risk the firm’s French
owner, PSA, could move the
production of the Astra from the
plant in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire,
which employs 1,000 workers, to a
factory in southern Europe.
Vauxhall’s only other UK factory
is in Luton, where it builds vans.
Labour MP for Ellesmere Port
and Neston, Justin Madders, said
the closure of the factory would be
“devastating for the area”.
The Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders wrote
to Mr Johnson stating that
withdrawing from the EU without
an agreement could cost hundreds
of thousands of jobs.
A Downing Street spokesman
said: “Obviously the PM would
prefer to leave with a deal and we
will work closely with business in
the lead-up to October 31.”

would blink first and
back down.
But a No10 spokes-
woman added: “Until
that happens we must
assume there will be a
no-deal Brexit on
October 31 and the
Government’s central
focus is preparing for
that.”
Connor Campbell of SpreadEx
said: “The pound had the fear of
God put in it.” Shadow Chancellor
John McDonnell said: “Johnson
and his ministers’ reckless threats
of a no deal are hitting pockets.”

is now more expensive.”
It came as Mr John-
son’s Brexit “war
cabinet” met for the
first time yesterday.
Michael Gove, in
charge of no-deal
planning, said minis-
ters are “working on the
assumption” of not
getting a deal. Fears
grew that the Prime Minister had
given up on a fresh Brexit deal
when it emerged he had
no plans to visit EU capi-
tals this month.
And five days into his
job he had still not
called Irish PM Leo
Varadkar. Downing

Sterling hits 2-year low as no-deal plans ramped up
HOLIDAYMAKERS faced fresh
pressure on their finances last
night as the pound fell to a two-
year low amid Boris Johnson’s
no-deal Brexit rhetoric.
Sterling tumbled yesterday, with
a pound worth barely more than a
euro at 1.0981, a 1.34% fall. Against
the dollar it fell 1.24% to 1.2228, its
lowest since March 2017.
Nigel Green of financial advisory
firm deVere Group said the pinch
will be felt by all those
going abroad, not just in
the eurozone. He added:
“The pound is the worst-
performing major
currency in the last three
months, meaning
