etween 4 and 8 million years ago
volcanoes dotted the landscape of the
Colorado Plateau, now part of the Navajo
Reservation. Worn down by erosion, their
remains are still awesome and inspirational.
Ed Mell portrays the buttes of the region in his
nearly 7-foot-wide canvas, Dilkon Vastness.
It is included in an exhibition of his recent
paintings at Owings Gallery in Santa Fe, New
Mexico, August 9 through September 12.
A love of automobile design led Mell to the
Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles
to study illustration and advertising. Despite
a successful career in advertising in New
York, two summers teaching silk-screening
and drawing on the Hopi Reservation had a
profound impact on him. He recalls, “Spending
months in that beauty right after being in the
city was the catalyst that changed my artistic
direction.” He turned to painting the landscapes
of the Southwest in which he was born.
Mell approaches his subject in a pared-
down naturalistic style as well as a dynamic
