cubistic style, both of which capture different
aspects of the subject. Dilkon Vastness is an
example of the former and Nature’s Theater
exemplifies the latter.
Mell pushes the landscape in both
approaches. He says, “You remember basic
forms, color and mood. The details are lost,
but the image remains. The landscape is

too dynamic to interpret realistically...” His
manipulations of the landscape on canvas
allow him to portray “the impact that nature
has in real life.”
His lifelong observation and appreciation
of desert landscape and his well-honed sense
of design give him the freedom to allow what
he calls “happy accidents” to occur. Although

he prepares with sketches and small studies,
where “the basic invention happens,” he has
discovered “when painting more abstract
paintings they kind of invent themselves.”
