with select narrative detail.”
Another standout piece in the show, Lay says,
is the antelope in Swift Prairie, an entirely new
subject matter for the artist. “Living in Wyoming,
antelope are a quite common site—gorgeous
color, amazing lines. I’ve always wanted to paint
them. Since returning to the old family ranch in
Oregon part of the year, I’ve been seeing more
and more of them in a place where as a child
it was a rarity,” she explains. “It’s a 25-mile
drive to town, usually the only vehicle on the
highway, but there, just about every time are
those antelope with the backdrop of the electric
blue mountains. I know I’m a lucky person
to always have inspiration surround me. It
always seems to be there and quite honestly the
problem has never been finding it, sometimes
the problem has been sifting through so much
of it. I’m a lucky girl.”
