pening August 1 at Giacobbe-Fritz
Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico,
is a new two-artist show featuring
the contemporary cowboy work of David
Kammerzell  and the train and landscapes
scenes of Charlie Meckel.
Kammerzell, who says his work has been
described as “contemporary nostalgia” and
“cowboy pop,” will be showing his pop-
influenced images that are brightly painted,
lean heavily on the iconography of the
West and have a modern sensibility to their
presentation, even at times using wallpaper-
like design elements in the background of
several works. “All of my pieces are from
historic vintage photos of actual cowboys and
cowgirls from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
Once I find a photo that looks interesting to
me I will take it into Photoshop to work out

the composition. This was the same process
I used when I was working for so many years
as a graphic animator,” says the artist. “I would
start with the subject and start playing around
with different elements on the computer
until I created something that hopefully

would be  dynamic and interesting to look at.
I’ve always liked the idea of putting things
together that you  wouldn’t normally think of
putting together, like scruffy old cowboys with
your grandmother’s wallpaper.”
