plane in

Verona, Italy,

late last

month, the

usually

bubbly actress, 51, appeared

to be emotional and stressed

out —even getting into a

heated exchange with a group

of people as she made her

way to a waiting car. “Julia’s

had a rough fewmonths,”

says a source. “Her marriage

[to cameramanDanny Moder,

50] has been crumbling and

it’s pushed Julia to her

breaking point. She’s tried to

keep it together for the sake of

their kids [Henry, 12, and

twinsHazelandPhinnaeus,

14], but it’s getting

increasingly difficult.”

Now the drama at home has left

the Oscar winner wondering about

what could have been. “She’s had

this intense chemistry and close

bond with Richard Gere ever since

they starred together in [the 1990

rom-com] Pretty Woman, and it’s

only gotten stronger as time’s gone

on,” the source tells OK!, explaining

that their “powerful connection”

has caused major problems during

her almost 17-year marriage to

Danny. “Richard’s always been the

one that Julia’s turned to in tough

times, and she feels like no one

knows her like he

does.” With her

personal life in shambles, “Julia

can’t help but wonder if she

should’ve been with Richard all

along,” the source continues, adding

that friends believe she’d run

straight into Richard’s arms — if

he’d have her. “Julia knows she’d be

risking it all for love, and the word

is, she thinks it might be worth it.”

SPECIAL CONNECTION

Over the years, Julia and Richard

— who reunited in 1999’s Runaway

Bride — have made no secret of their

feelings for each other. “I was so

mesmerized [by Julia],” Richard, 69,

recalled of meeting the actress for the

first time, confessing that he was very

physically attracted to her. “It was all

about the legs!” And while Julia’s

publicly gushed how “close” they are,

a friend says that behind closed doors,

she’s always talking about how

“intelligent, worldly, compassionate

and sensitive Richard is!” Adds the

source, “It’s one of the reasons people

have always thought she’s secretly in

love with him.”

If that’s true, there’s one thing

standing in her way: Richard’s wife

of one year, Alejandra Silva, 36. “Of

course he adores Alejandra, but there

are fears that he might be playing

with fire by being so close to Julia,”

spills the source, noting that the

Notting Hill star has always been

Richard’s “dream girl,” and if the

timing had been right back in the

day, “he would’ve married her” in a

heartbeat. “If Julia ends up back on

the market, it might cause Richard to

question his own relationship.”

Friends know that only time tell,

but they’ve got their fingers crossed

that Julia and Richard somehow find

themselves together. “Everyone has

always thought that they were

perfect for each other,” explains the

source. “It will certainly be an

interesting fewmonths —

especially if Julia does pull the
