best bets: buzz bissinger’s beauty

ÆThe thing about deodorant is that it’s not how you feel
about it but how others around you feel about it. So I enlisted
the help of my wife, Lisa. After ten hours of wear, I went to
Lisa with arms upraised so she could sample a whiff.

My current product is
Mennen’s Speed Stick. It goes
on easily but it’s gooey, so
I decided to shake things up.
Everybody should have at
least one Old Spice item in
their lives given the longevity
of the brand and that great
seaman’s whistle. Lisa said it
smelled soapy, and I already
have enough bland in my life.

Old Spice Classic
Original Scent Deodorant
$3, walmart.com

At $25 for a stick of deodor-
ant, it should be edible, cure
impotence, and run the
table at Jeopardy! But Chanel
is Chanel, and I am of the
superficial price-slut school
that the more expensive
something is, the better it is
for you. The forest scent
lingered, but Lisa was under-
whelmed given the price.

Chanel Allure
Homme Deodorant
$25, bergdorfgoodman.com

Tom’s has no aluminum,
which, whether we like it or
not, does clog pores. I was
skeptical, but Lisa said it
smelled pleasingly fruity, and
ten hours later the scent was
still strong. In the end,
it was my favorite. Congrat-
ulations, Tom of Maine.
You have earned a vaunted
spot in my armpits.

Tom’s of Maine Natural
Long-Lasting Deodorant
$5, walmart.com

his therapist-approved mask
GlamGlow Supermud
Clearing Treatment
$59, dermstore.com
The GlamGlow mask, with its six different acids,
activated charcoal, and K-17 clay, really, really
works. My forehead, usually wan and weary-
looking, was transformed. And the results last
from application to application. Even my shrink,
Penny Stark, says I look appreciably younger.

his in-flight wipes
Oars + Alps Natural Face
and Body Wipes
$16, amazon.com
Airline-cabin air feels fetid and stale because
it is fetid and stale. I take these wipes in my
carry-on to keep me feeling fresh and clean. The
ice-crystal side is used for exfoliation and the
removal of dirt and sweat from the face, while the
other side is for the arms, legs, and chest.

his buildable bronzer
Trish McEvoy Light &
Lift Face Color Duo
$68, trishmcevoy.com
Bronzer for me is not about tanning but
adding color along the contours of the face with
the added zing of highlighting the cheek
apple. I start on the lower jawline with the brush,
using both colors, and work my way up to the
forehead along the edges of my face. Then I blend
a little bit into the cheekbone.

his night cream
Peter Thomas Roth Potent-C
Bright & Plump Moisturizer
$68, nordstrom.com
Every night, regardless of whether I use an
exfoliating peel or retinol, I follow up with this
moisturizer. I love La Mer—who doesn’t?—but
it’s just too expensive and not enough of a miracle
worker. The Roth keeps me sufficiently hydrated;
it isn’t too thick and feels wonderful on the skin.

his subtle lip shine
Tom Ford Lumière Lip
$55, sephora.com
The texture isn’t the best, but I love the
shine it gives my lips, and there is just the right
hint of color. I use the purple-tinged Aurora. It
contains plant extracts and hyaluronic acid, an
ingredient so seemingly omnipresent I may
start adding it to my food to make my kidneys
feel plump and juicy.

his lip mask
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
$20, sephora.com
If you are flying cross-country, as I do frequently,
your skin becomes pasty and pallid as the
process of decomposition (bad enough in your
60s) advances exponentially. Which is why
I take this jar for my lips. Yes, I know you should
apply it just before you go to bed, but
it’s so velvety and smooth and pampering.
