about 30 minutes),I thentracein thedetailsusing
a sheetof blackcarbonpaper.

StepFive
ForthisdemonstrationI amstartingonthe
whitepartof thebreast.Firstof all I paintedthe
whiteareaswitha dilutedNeutralTint(Holbein
watercolour).WhywouldI covera whiteareawitha
darkercolourwhenit’sgoingto bewhitewhenit’s
finished?Well,it’snotgoingto becompletelywhite
whenit’sfinished,andwithoutthedarkerundercoat
it’snotpossibleto getanydepthin thatarea.
To helpcreatetexture,I crosshatchtheareawith
a WindsorandNewtonseries7 #2brush.Mostof
thepaintingwillbepaintedwiththisbrush.I splaythe
bristlesin orderto geta betterappearanceof texture.
Afterthecrosshatchingin NeutralTint,I then
gooverthetopofthatusingwhite,tryingto
preservesomeofthedarkercolourunderneath.

I continueto builduptheareawithsuccessive

I putwhiteedgingonsomeof thefeathers.For
theredcapandchestI usedVermillion.
Thedarkerareasof theredwerevermillionwith
blackadded.ForthelighterareasI usedorange and
yellow.Thereis a generalruleaboutgouachethat
if youwantto darkenyourcolour,addblackor a
darkercolour,andif youwantlightenit, addwhite.
Thatwon’tworkwithred,becauseif youaddwhite
to redyougetpink,soto avoidgettingpinkI used
yellowandorange.
