StepSeven
Timeto dotheeye.Theeyeis themostimportant

thentheentirepaintingwon’tlookrighteither.For
birdsthathavedarkeyes,I painttheeyeareablack,
whendryI adda littlecrescentof greyin thetop
of theeyeanda smallerareaonthebottom.To
thetopareaI adda whitehighlight.Thegreyarea
at thebottomgetscoveredwithBurntSienna.The
birdis nowfinished,exceptforthelegs,whichI will
finishofflater.

StepEight
NowI’llworkonthebranch.I wetthebranchwith
waterthenaddHolbeinSepiawatercolour,makingit
darkeronthebottomandlighteronthetop.

I then“shape” the paint using a dry brush
to movethepaint around, so that a patterned
texturestarts to appear. I add some white to
theupperside of the branch and blend it with
thesepia.
Thepattern is delineated with fine darker lines.
Toadda bitof reflective light, the bottom of the
branchis coated with Burnt Sienna, which is then
blendedto the rest of the branch.

StepNine
Thepaintingneeds foliage to make it look more
complete.On a transparent sheet of acetate, I draw
a numberof leaves. I use acetate, as it allows me to
seewherethe leaves go in relation to the bird and
branch.I then copy the drawing on my photocopier
