TOP TIP:
RETAIN TONES
The low angle of the sun
around sunset and sunsets
can make exposures
particularly tricky, making
them full of contrast. You’ll
have to choose between
exposing for the highlights
or the shadows. In these
situations, it’s best to
underexpose your shots in
Aperture Priority mode by
dialling in a few stops of
exposure compensation. Be
sure to shoot in the raw file
format too, and you’ll retain
more bright sky detail.

PLAN AHEAD

1

There are some fantastic photo
apps for iOS and Android
phones. The Photographer’s
Ephemeris (right) and PhotoPills,
for example, both enable you to
work out the direction of the sun
at any given time of day. This is
invaluable for working out where
to position yourself in the early
hours of the morning, to make
sure you’re in the very best spot.

EDIT THE RAW FILE

2

Raw files contain loads of
extra information that is
simply lost if you only shoot
JPEG. If you’ve taken images
at sunset or sunrise, tweaking
the exposure or white balance
of your raw file in Camera Raw
or Lightroom is a very powerful
tool. I reduced the exposure of
this shot by over a full stop to
retain the highlight detail.
