Often, when Apple brings out a new
iPhone, macOS and iTunes need
a refresh to enable them to connect
reliably. Many are finding this with
the iPhone 11, although in Mojave or
Catalina it’s more likely to be handled
automatically for you.
With your phone on charge and
using Wi–Fi, open Settings > General
Software Update and check for and
install any available updates to iOS.
Then on your Mac, visit apple.com/
itunes and download the latest version
of iTunes from there. Install it, and see
if that enables sync by unlocking your
iPhone and connecting it to your Mac.
If it doesn’t, disconnect them. In the
Finder, use the command Go to Folder
in the Finder’s Go menu to open the
folder /System/Library/Private
Frameworks/MobileDevice.framework/
Versions/Current/Resources. With that
open in a Finder window, unlock your
phone again and connect it to your
Mac. In the open folder, double–click
the item there named MobileDevice
Updater. This should inform you of
a software update. Install that, and
iTunes should finally recognize your
new iPhone. Other problems which
could prevent successful syncing
include dirt or fluff in the port at either
end of the cable connecting your
iPhone to your Mac, or a duff cable.
If you’re still struggling, you should
make an appointment with your
nearest Apple store.
Can’t sync new iPhone 11
I’ve just got a brand new iPhone 11 running iOS 13, but when I connected it to my Mac,
that complained of an “unknown error” 42018, and refused to sync it with iTunes. Do
I have to upgrade from High Sierra to sync successfully?

HOTSPOT OFF IN iOS 13?
In iOS and iPadOS 13.1 and

but you control whether to
Allow Others To Join.
HOW TO UPLOAD
BURST PHOTOS TO
MY PHOTO STREAM?
By default, Photos only
uploads photos in burst

go to Settings > [your name]
> iCloud > Photos, or Settings
> Photos, and enable Upload
Burst Photos, but beware
you don’t hit your stream
upload limits.
New iPhone not syncing? Make sure you’re running the most
up–to–date iOS, then download the latest version of iTunes.
