MINI LESSON: Cattails
This work, like the previous examples, uses
color to warm up chilly scenes. Cattails feels
animated with light and showcases a field in
that ambiguous time between seasons, such
as late November and late March. Chlorophyll
has been stripped from the reeds. Small pools
of cool blue suggest lingering water. Only the
distant amalgamated line of dark blue-green
conifers presents the note of living foliage.
The advantage of using a brushed
aluminum substrate becomes apparent
with the use of translucent colors: gamboge,
quinacridone fuchsia, ultramarine blue and
carmine lake. When viewers shift their viewing
angle even slightly, the light reflecting from
the surface sparkles and simultaneously
changes the pattern of its sparkle.
The colors in Cattails are predominantly
anchored to warm golds, ambers and
red-browns. The complementary blues and
blue-greens are situated on the periphery
of the work at the top and bottom. Cattails
