more accessible than ever - you can play many
of your favorite titles on your smartphone or
tablet, and some of the world’s most iconic
games have been ported from console and PC
into mobile games, like OldSchool Runescape,
which surpassed five million downloads
on the App Store and Google Play Store
in January. The mobile gaming market now
accounts for the bulk of the gaming industry’s
revenue - 47% of it in 2018, worth an eye-
watering US$63.2 billion.


NEW PLAYERS REVVING THEIR ENGINES


Perhaps more telling than the demise of Xbox
and PlayStation is the new players entering the
arena, promising to revolutionize the industry
and change the way we play. Twitch has already
gone a long way in doing so, allowing popular
gamers to stream their playtime live with
millions of viewers around the world, creating
a new entertainment streaming culture that
has resulted in many consumers preferring
to watch other people play games than play
games themselves. In the past year alone, more
than 10 billion hours of gaming content
was streamed from the platform, owned by
Amazon, a figure that has climbed more than
40% from the year prior. And that’s not the only
new innovation...
