GOALS OF THE DECADE

2017
Emre Can v Watford (A) Premier League (1 May)
A goal worthy of winning any game, the German midfielder’s incredible overhead
kick gave the Reds a vital victory at Vicarage Road to keep their Champions
League qualification push on track.
The move started with a throw-in on the Liverpool right. By the time a Divock
Origi pass reached the feet of Lucas, the German ace was still over 25 yards from
goal but making headway towards the penalty area. As he advanced, Roberto
Firmino began to jog away from the 18-yard box, prompting Hornets centre-half
Adrian Mariappa to follow him, opening up a space in behind.
Lucas immediately spotted this and pinged a delightfully-chipped pass for Can
who was now just inside the box. He checked his run slightly, flung both legs into
the air, swivelled his body and connected with the ball with his right foot at head-
height. Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes didn’t even dive.
“I saw the space and then I ran behind,” Can later explained. “When the ball
came, I wanted to head it but it was a great ball from Lucas. I just didn’t think too
much and I scored a beauty like that. I think it’s the best goal I’ve ever scored.”
