To open the Piano Roll, either double-click a MIDI region, or select it and
either click the Scissors button in Logic’s control bar, or hit the ‘P’ key.
Step-by-step Using Piano Roll Editor shortcuts
1
Mini menu
You can summon this handy mini menu
by Control/right-clicking (or two-finger clicking
on a trackpad) anywhere on Logic Pro’s Piano
Roll background.
2
Region toggle
When viewing multiple regions at once,
double-click a note to view only the region it
came from, then double-click the background
to restore the others.
3
Z ahead
Use the Z key to zoom the currently
selected notes to fit the window. Tap the key
repeatedly to toggle back and forth between
zoom levels.
4
Pitch perfect
Select a note, then select all other notes
of the same pitch by clicking the note on the
vertical piano keyboard or use the Shift+E
keyboard command.
7
Strike a transpose
Swiftly transpose selected notes up or
down by holding down Option and using the
Up or Down arrow keys. Hold down Shift for
instant octave leaps.
5
Just repeats
Repeat a note (or selection of notes) with
the Command+R key command – just tap for
as many repeats as needed. The repeats are
pasted at the next empty beat.
8
Nudge nudge
You can nudge notes left or right by
current beat value using Option plus the Left
or Right arrow keys. The current beat value is
found in the toolbar.
6
Force legato
This function extends note lengths to the
start of the following note, useful for smoothing
out pad parts. Quickly achieve this by hitting
Shift+Backslash.
9
Looking shifty
You can use the Left and Right arrow keys
to browse through notes. But hold down Shift
and it will add them to the current selection as
you go along.
