select Properties, then click the Sharing tab.
Youcan now clickthe Sharebutton to make
the folder available on the network. However,
note thatsome system folders,such as the
Windows directory,cannot be shared and will
have the necessary button greyed out.
To shareafolder in Windows, you need to
select which users will have access to the
folder over the network.Thedefault share
username thatyou’reusing will be listed in
the main window with aPermission Level of
Owner.You should leave this setting alone
but you can choose additional users thatwill
have access to this folder.
If you turned offpassword-protected
sharing, you should select the Guest account
from the drop-down menu and click Add; if
you’reusing password-protected sharing,
select the user accounts thatyou want to give
access to and click Add (repeat for as many
user accounts as you need).To give all user
accounts access, simply select Everyone from
the drop-down menu.
Next, for each account you’ve selected, you
can choose the Permission Level. Read lets
those users look at,but not modify,files stored
in this folder; Read/Write lets users view and
modify files stored in this folder.For home use,
it’s best to set Read/Write as the permission
level for all users, unless you specifically don’t
want network usersbeing able to modify files.
To access anetwork share, open up
Windows Explorer on your new computer,
then click Network.Youshould see your old
computer listed. If you don’t, you can connect
directly.Todothis, go to your old computer
and open acommand window,then type
ipconfig.Note down your computer’s IP
address. On your new computer,press
Windows+R and type\\<ip address of your
old computer>(for example, \\192.168.0.105)
and hit Enter.You may be prompted for a
username and password: this is the username
and passwordyou use to log into your oldcomputer.Ifyou turned offpassword
sharing, you shouldn’t get aprompt.
Once done, you’ll see all of your
shared folders, so you can copy the
files from your old computer to your
new one. Don’t forget to repeat this
for all user accounts on your old
and new PC alike.WITH AN OLD HARD DISK/
EXTERNAL HARD DISK
One of the simplest ways to transfer
files is to use aUSB harddisk. Plug it
into your old computer,dragand
drop the files you want to transfer
on to it, then transfer the disk to your
new computer and copy the files off.
Depending on the size of your
external disk, you may need to
perform this job in afew stages.
If you have an old computer that
has died but the harddisk still works,
you can remove the harddisk from
your old computer.You can install
this in your newone if you’re comfortable
doing so,but the easiest option is to buy a
USB-to-SATA adaptor such as the BENFEI USB
3.0 to SATA III HDD SDD (£14,www.amazon.
co.uk). Plug the harddisk into this and the USB
portinto yournew computer,and you cancopy
