OCTOBER 2019 35
of a 200-page chapter
in Jones’ book
mentioned above
were made by a man
who has no aspect
at all between Saturn
and Neptune. The
symbols themselves
thus reflect what was
said about Saturn
and Neptune toward
the beginning of this
article, while the
bookish interpretations
are more reflective
of Saturn alone. The
partnership of Jones
and Wheeler, however,
reflects the best side
of Saturn and Neptune
working together.
Wheeler had studied
astrology with Jones
and perhaps others, but made her living
as a psychic and a medium. She was a
friend and neighbor of Zoe Wells, who
also worked with Jones on the Sabian
Symbols project. However, Wheeler
was certainly the main contributor in
regard to the mysterious and sometimes
striking images connected with each of
the 360 degrees of the zodiac, while
the role played by Jones himself, as we
can see below, was to set limits that
were essentially controlled, exacting,
and scientific. The symbols originated
through the collaboration of Wheeler
and Jones were produced over a period
of one or two hours on a single day.
She had at one time said to him that
she wanted to do something important,
and as it turned out she certainly did.
An unfortunate astrological note here
is that it would be nice if either of the two
astrologers had left us a note on at least the
date of their meeting, but we only know
the year and the location, as you will see.
One of the many blessings of
astrology is that each astrologer brings
his or her own way of thinking to the
discipline. Some break new ground and
offer insight into the inner workings of
astrology, and some are content just to
work with the astrological knowledge
that came before them. Most astrologers
do a bit of both, learning their craft
through working with charts and
clients, as well as through sharing their
ideas and observations with others. Still
others have established their personal
imprint on the astrology that comes
after them. Jones was that kind of
astrologer.
