F
ollowing last season’s deadly cliffhanger, in which
Jamie found himself in the unenviable situation of
being forced to turn against one of his nearest and
dearest, the upcoming fifth outing of time-bending series
Outlander will have a strong focus on family.
“Who is family? How do you keep them together? How
do you protect them? What makes a family? How do you
deal with your family?” executive producer Toni Graphia
previews of the central theme.
Having received the order to locate and kill his godfather,
Murtagh Fraser (Duncan Lacroix), our strapping hero Jamie
(Sam Heughan, pictured with Caitriona Balfe as Claire) is
left with little choice but to comply. Meanwhile, relations
with his son-in-law Roger (Richard Rankin) remain tense,
to say the least, after Jamie beat him to within an inch of
his life in a case of mistaken identity.
“There’s a lot going on for the relationship at the start of
this season,” Rankin reveals. “They don’t really know each
other, they’re a bit unsure of each other. Obviously, Jamie
played a huge part in what happened to Roger and what
he had to go through, through season four, so I’m sure
Roger won’t have completely let that go.”
However, Rankin believes there is potential for the two
men to come together. Blood is thicker than water, after all.
“They are family, they are kin... They’re both MacKenzies,”
he begins. “So I hope to see them forge a strong relationship
through the coming seasons. I’d like to think so.”
