LIEVEOMA

G

o for a quiet walk with Grandma
in the sweet Lieve Oma, a story
that captures the spirit of
autumn. Crunching leaves underfoot in
search of edible mushrooms, the teenage
protagonist slowly begins to open up to
their grandmother. Most game stories ask
you to do dramatic things, but this focuses
on a small moment in time. TS

BUTTERFLY SOUP

D

ialogue is the heart of any visual
novel, and it’s impressive just
how much character Brianna Lei
has crammed into Butterfly Soup. It’s a
game about gay romance in an all-
women’s baseball club, but really it’s a
game about its cast, which bursts onto
the screen with a vividness uncommon in,
well, the majority of video games. TS

HEROINE’S QUEST

This is a heartfelt love
letter to the Quest for
Glory series, but set in a
new fantasy world inspired
by Norse mythology.
Naturally you’ll still fight,
sneak or magic your way
through point-and-click
problems, in this massive,
beautiful game that was
somehow released for
free. TS

BIRDLAND

Plenty of games feature
teenagers, but the
summer-camp-set
Birdland is the rare game
that convincingly gives
them a voice. It’s a
mystery, and a romance
title, but above all Birdland
is a compelling story, with
some of the most natural
dialogue you’ll find in any
game. TS

SPIDER AND WEB

Mixing flashbacks with
interrogation sequences,
and making great use of
text’s slippery nature, it’s
not hard to see why Spider
and Web is one of the most
celebrated works of
interactive fiction. That
‘interactive’ part isn’t for
show: this is a Cold-War-
era spy story shaped by
you. TS

DELTARUNE:CHAPTER 1

W

ho knows where Undertale
follow-up Deltarune is
heading for its second
chapter, but this multi-hour
RPG already feels like a
complete game, taking the player from
their school, to a troubled fantasy land
and back again. There are subtle
improvements over Undertale, including

more detailed pixel art and the addition of
battle companions, but the core
experience will be familiar if you’ve already
saved or slaughtered the world of the
original game. Thankfully that core is
fantastic with the heroes and villains of
Deltarune going on surprising journeys in
this hilarious, at times moving RPG. TS
