Spider-Man: Far From Home
you’re one of those who
haven’t yet watched Avengers:
Endgame, don’t watch this movie.
Or so warns Web and spoiler
slinger Tom Holland, who plays
Peter Parker/Spider-Man in
Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Following the events in Endgame,
Spider-Man: Far From Home
starts off with the grieving Peter
deciding to take a European
getaway with his school
friends and catch up with his
romantic interest, MJ (Zendaya).
Everything seems peachy until
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)
crashes his vacay with a new
mission that he can’t back away
from. It involves a bunch of angry
elemental creatures attacking
the continent, and probably the
rest of the world.
Far From Home introduces and
explores the surrogate father-
son/mentor-prodigy dynamic
between Fury and Parker, which
was initially established by Tony
Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) in
the previous Spider-Man and
Avengers installments. It’s a
deeper look into how Parker
survives the rest of the world as
a man on the verge of adulthood,
trying to make it on his own
without a family—a spider without
a web.

WORDS CARMELA MARAAN FERNANDO
In lieu of his primary support
system, Peter will be wielding
better, stronger, and more
advanced defenses in the form
of a shiny and upgraded Spider-
Man suit. And aside from Fury,
he’ll be working alongside former
S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill
(Cobie Smulders), friend and
bodyguard ‘Happy’ Hogan (Jon
Favreau), and master trickster,
illusionist, and elemental expert
Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake
Gyllenhaal), who claims to
be from Earth-833, a parallel
dimension in the Multiverse.
Like Peter, Mysterio is also far
from home. But is he a fellow
hero or harbinger of disaster?
Since he’s a master of trickery,
there’s a 6954% chance that he’s
a villain in disguise, as how he’s
characterized in the comics. But
that’s already obvious, so the
ongoing fan theory is that he’s
actually a misguided good guy.
Or is he?
Also, if Mysterio comes from
Earth-833, then there must be
another Quentin Beck on our
Earth (aka Earth-616). Master
illusionist + two Earths + two
Quentins = crazy plot twist.
And while we’re on fan theories,
another states that Iron Man
might just make a cameo
appearance in one scene where
Peter slips on a pair of cool
shades, on which you’ll see the
illustrious Stark reflected at
one point.
One Peter Parker, two father
figures, two possible villains,
instant access to the Multiverse
after the Thanos snap—this looks
like the birth of a fresh story arc
after Endgame closed several
chapters. And boy, we’re so ready
for this.
Peter Parker’s
passport lists
August 10th as
his birthday.
It is a reference
to Spider-Man’s
first appearance
in the Marvel
universe, which
was in Amazing
Fantasy #15,
released August
10, 1962.
